Interactive Gleason grading
This is a new tool for learning and
standardizing Gleason
grading of prostate
biopsies. A
journal article
describing the web site has been published
in
the Human
Pathology journal. This web site also
serves as a tool for
assessing observer
variability of Gleason grading, and as
such,
it was utilized
in the study design: An experienced uropathologist scored a series of 62
biopsies, first conventionally using original glass slides, and
6 weeks later from
virtual slides on
the web site. The intraobserver agreement
was
excellent.
The virtual slides were
also
viewed by 2
other uropathologists,
with
resulting
interobserver
coefficients within
the range of previously
reported studies
using glass slides only.

Synchronized virtual slides
This is an example of viewing two stains made sequentially on a single slide.
With this technique we are able to view and
compare stains which never
co-existed in real life. As an example, we
show H&E staining and IHC of
AMACR/p63 in 23 prostate needle biopsies
(the latter done after de-staining
H&E).
Comparison of H&E and IHC is
important in clinical diagnostics, but is
difficult by conventional means.
This site also has importance in prostate
histopathology education. From
a technical perspective, this web site
demonstrates how virtual slides
easily can be aligned for synchronized
viewing. A
journal article describing this
technique has been published.

Medical Parasitology
The aim of this project is to adapt virtual microscopy for parasitology specimens. The project was motivated by difficulties in education and quality assurance both in Sweden and in Nicaragua. Virtual microscopy addresses major problems, such as specimen handling, availability, reproducibility, distribution and interpretation.

Automated quantification of fluorescence in situ hybridization signals
Using a popular, open source image manipulation tool, ImageJ, a macro for FISH signal assessment has been created.
Combined with digitization of FISH samples, the FishJ macro enables gene copy number to be assessed and re-evaluated on any area of a digitized specimen. |
