Estrogen receptor

up one level

Estrogen receptor assay is needed to identify patients eligible for post-operative hormonal therapies. Tumors positive for ER respond to anti-estrogen or aromatase inhibitor therapies. In unselected cohorts of breast carcinomas 70-80% of tumors are ER-positive. ER-positivity also associates with favourable prognosis. Scoring of the slides can be done quantitatively using the histoscore method (% of positive cells x staining intensity; 0-4), or qualitatively using three classes (-, +., and ++).
