HER-2/neu (C-erbB2)

HER-2/neu is an oncogene activated in ~20% of breast carcinomas via oncogene amplification. Overexpression of HER-2/neu oncoprotein can be detected by immunohistochemistry. Qualitative scoring is most commonly used (0/1+/2+/3+). Borderline immunostaining results (2+) need to be confirmed with DNA in situ hybridization (FISH or CISH).
