Mutation in the p53 tumor suppressor gene alters the half-life of the p53 protein, leading to its accumulation in the cancer cell. Immunohistochemically detectable p53 protein expression occurs in 20-30% of breast cancers and correlates with aggressive tumor phenotype and poor survival of patients.
