Periductal mastitis (PM) is a condition affecting women at reproductive age. PM presents as a subareolar breast mass with or without overlying breast inflammation, a periareolar abscess, or a mammillary fistula.
The cause of periductal mastitis is uncertain, although bacteria appear to play a role. Histologically PM shows inflammatory infiltrate, fibrosis, foam cells (macrophages), inflammatory giant cells and epithelial degeneration. |
