Signet ring cell carcinoma

up one level

Primary signet-ring cell carcinoma of the breast is usually considered as a variant of lobular carcinoma and usually originates from the lobular epithelium. A morphologically heterogeneous group of invasive carcinoma, defined as having at least 20% of cells with a mucus-containing (PAS+) cytoplasmic vacuole. Nuclei located at periphery ('signet ring cells'). Presents with diffuse growth pattern, often concomitantly with LCIS.
Architecturally typical ILC where PAS staining shows the signet ring cell morphology.
