1. ABERRANT CRYPT FOCI (ACF) OF HUMAN COLON MUCOSA
|

Case 1
ACF of “typical” type according to Fenoglio’s classification [Toxi-
cologic Pathology 27: 632-642 (1999)]. 82 years old patient, tissue is
fixed with 95% ethanol during 24h and embedded in paraffin. Mucosa
adjacent to an adenocarcinoma of right colon with an ACF.
Slide 1 = hematein/eosin staining
Slide 2 = immunoperoxidase staining using a mixture of
anti-M1/MUC5AC Mabs [Tumor Biol: 24:109-115 (2003)].
Comments: note that the immunostaining is restricted to the goblet
cells in the upper part of the crypts in ACF. The mucosa adjacent to
the ACF is not stained by these antibodies.

ACF of “hyperplastic” type according to Fenoglio’s classi- fication
[Toxicologic Pathology 27: 632-642 (1999)]. 63 years old patient,
tissue is fixed with 95% ethanol during 24h and embedded in paraffin.
Mucosa adjacent to an adenocarcinoma of rectum with an ACF.

2. MUCOSA ADJACENT TO COLON ADENOCARCINOMAS

Case 4
“Swiss roll” of the mucosa adjacent to a rectal adenocarcinoma of a 69
years old patient. A small fragment of the adenocarcinoma is visible in
the center of the Swiss roll.
Slide 7 = hematein/eosin staining
Slide 8 = immunoperoxidase staining using a mixture of anti-M1/MUC5AC Mabs.
Comments: note the strong immunoreactivity of the transitional mucosa
(the 30 crypts nearest of the adenocarcinoma) which is thicker owing to
the elongation of crypts, certain crypts being branched. In some areas, the
mucus struck to the surface of the mucosa is strongly positive.
